Sonic Runners

Sonic Runners

Sonic Runners brings back Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and the rest of the series iconic main characters (yes, even Eggman/Robotnik) in a game that the old school fans would love: a 2D high speed platformer. Yes, Sonic gets a mobile game that follows in the same format as his original Sega Genesis games, and it looks awesome. They even went with an all new sprite-based graphical style that feels very retro. But in this modern age of gaming, can Sonic Racers still prove to be relevant?

Batman and The Flash Hero Run

Batman and The Flash Hero Run

Two of DC comics most iconic heroes in a endless runner game? Sounds like a great recipe for something awesome right? In some ways, Batman & The Flash Hero Run is exactly the game that it sounds like, but there are plenty of times where the game just fails to fully capitalize on having good material. As an endless runner, the game provides a pretty solid gaming experience. But if you are a big fan of the two characters, you may feel like the game pretty much wasted a lot of good opportunities in making full use of the dark knight and the scarlet speedster.

Rayman Fiesta Run

Rayman Fiesta Run

Rayman Fiesta Run marks Rayman’s full entry to the mobile platform. Sure, he already appeared previously in Rayman Jungle Run, but that felt more like an adaptation of the old Rayman console games (particularly, as many fans of the character would point out: Rayman Origins). In Fiesta Run, the game fully embraces the mobile platforms style and limitations. It makes amazing use of the screen tapping controls and the way that the visuals can be presented on the current hardware –the end result is an amazing game that is not only fun to play but beautiful to look at.

Giant Boulder of Death

Giant Boulder of Death

Giant Boulder of Death is exactly what it sounds like: you launch a giant boulder and then try to cause as much death and destruction as you can. While this whole thing sounds like it would be right at home in a hardcore heavy metal album, GBD is a more of a cartoony, funny, kind of game. Sure there is violence, but that’s mostly cartoon violence that would not be out of place on children’s TV network. But hey, this is an Adult Swim game made with the devs at Pik Pok, so that end result is hardly a surprise.

Robot Unicorn Attack 2

Robot Unicorn Attack 2

We give up! There are no right words to properly describe Adult Swim’s Robot Unicorn Attack 2 (developed by Pik Pok). On one hand, there is the slightly simple and straightforward, point-the-obvious way of describing it: a 2D platformer where you control a Unicorn. But as for everything else the game offers; crazy worlds of magma, space whales, cosmic squids, laser shooting cyclop-giants, and more? Well, let’s just say that this game is a boatload of the craziest endless running fun you can have on a mobile platform and leave it at that.

Banana Kong

Banana Kong

Games like Banana Kong do not do much to stand out, but they are very safe selections when it comes to playing mobile titles. What this game has going for itself is consistency. The controls are tight and accurate, the visuals smooth and nice to look at, and if you want a 2D vanilla endless runner, this game offers exactly that. You run, collect bananas, dodge obstacles, swing on vines, and occasionally take a long swim underwater. Banana Kong is an ape that seems to be capable of a lot of things, and keeping you entertained is one of them.

Angry Gran Run

Angry Gran Run

Some games are great to have thanks to the gameplay they provide, some games are just nice to have because they are just fun –Angry Gran Run brings the fun. Sure, as an endless runner, this is pretty decent game, but it really does not offer anything new in terms of game mechanics or features. But it is a game that we highly recommend because it is a lot of laughs to turn on and play. Is there a crazy grandma running down the street to bash punks? Sign us up! That sounds like something we all want to see.

Rail Rush

Rail Rush

Okay, fact is, among endless runner games, the whole escape from the crushing giant boulder of death scene from Indiana Jones serves as a massive inspiration for the whole game. It is an interesting thing –trying to run away with a stolen ancient artifact while avoiding deathtraps. Rail Rush does pretty much the same thing –except that instead of taking a page from the same scene, it takes inspiration from the ending of the Temple of Doom –yes, that insane minecart ride that has become the basis for many other movie scenes and theme park rides, has also been adapted into a full, standalone game. And that is what Rail Rush is.

Canabalt HD

Canabalt HD

Full disclosure, there are times when we leave Canabalt’s browser game version open and running just to listen to the main theme “Run!” by Danny Baranoswky. That is just how impressive this game is, even the soundtrack is something to love. Developer Adam Atomic certainly has the penchant for delivering games with a certain sense of theatrical flair and Canabalt is certainly one that embodies that trait. This endless runner hints to the players of something big and grand that is happening and is only implied through the course of the game. While most of the narrative is lost in the details of the backgrounds, it is hard to pay attention to the little details while your character is running at something akin to mach speed across treacherous rooftops.

Whale Trail Frenzy

Whale Trail Frenzy

If you are looking for a serious game, stop. No kidding, this game is called Whale Trail Frenzy, and in it, you control a whale named Willow who uses a magical trail to fly. So if you are looking for a game that has a more mature outlook or at the very least, even attempts trying to depict a semblance of realistic logic, you are looking in the wrong place. Even the bad evil clouds look just a little shy of being grumpy –making this title possibly one of the happiest games you will ever see.

Endless Running Games

The best games you can play when you are simply trying to kill time are games like endless runners. Sure, it is hard to put the game away if you are having a particularly good run (and coming close to breaking a previous high score), but more often than not, it is easier to put away an endless runner than a real time action game or an RPG. Also, endless runners have the benefit of being no brainers. There is no need to think too hard about strategy or how to manage resources or what upgrades you need to purchase next –just start the game and run as a far as you –that is all that matters.

Temple Run 2

Temple Run 2 App Game

This is the game series that pretty much started the genre and this sequel is proof that the developers understand endless running in the most important ways. Temple Run 2 takes players to the sky temple for an all new set of challenges that takes them into all new runs across new kinds of terrain. There is even a whole sequence that you do on a minecart; this game obviously takes its Indiana Jones inspiration seriously. The best part is that the gameplay is very solid; dashing, sliding, and jumping your way around, under and above obstacles at breakneck speed is incredibly fun to do in this game.

Despicable Me: Minion Rush

Despicable Me App Game

If you liked the Minions movie, then you will certainly love this game. Sure, it does not do much to tie into any of the Despicable Me films, but it still manages to capture the gag-style humor of the minions in such a very charming and loyal way. From the crazy mad-lab experiments, to the giant-sizing items (yes, it happens in-game), to the bananas (don’t ask), this game will make fans of the franchise very happy. But even traditional endless running fans will like the fact that Minion Rush’s stages are very complex and the challenges in this game will make you sweat hard.

The game is delivered in full 2D sprite animation except that the perspective you get is very 3D, the effect is incredible too. The game has a way of making you feel as if the horizon is always slowly moving towards you –reminiscent of old arcade racing games. The overall challenge of the game is not that hard as the number and types of obstacles you encounter are limited. But if you wanted a simple endless runner to have on your device, this is the least you can do.

Rayman Jungle Run

Rayman Jungle Run App Game

This game is pretty much Rayman Origins for the mobile, except that Jungle Run is far more streamlined and well known. The game brings back console icon Rayman for more platforming fun. Players will want to play the game as perfectly as possible in order to acquire all the items and achieve the most number of unlockables at the end of it all. The visuals are very cute and brightly colored and the whole game feels like it has been designed optimally for the mobile platform. Granted that the sequel, Rayman Fiesta is a much better game, you should still take the time to master Jungle Run.

Subway Surfers is what you get when you take a bunch of random characters and tell them they can ride hoverboards over the subway tracks. The game starts off pretty slow, but once players get used to the concept of acquiring board power ups and also managing to pull off successive dodges in a row, the gameplay picks up and players can really get hooked on the challenge that Subway Surfers presents.

Into the Dead

Into the Dead App Game

Currently our favorite endless runner title; Into the Dead combines two amazing things into a single game: an ambiguously unlimited world to run in, and hordes and hordes of zombies. Seriously, as much as there is a high congestion of undead themed stuff out there, they are so easy to appreciate. In Into the Dead, players have to run through a massive field, forest, and cornfield in order to get away from zombies. Along the way, you can pick up items such as firearms and melee weapons to help you deal with the ones that get in your way. For an endless runner, you only encounter two kinds of hazards in the game: trees and the undead. Trees will not kill you, but hitting one with make you lose a bit of balance, the rest of the danger is made of zombies that will try to grab you and eat you.
